Let AI write your weekly status update from work you already did

The weekly status update is easy to write and hard to remember, which is why it takes 40 minutes. An AI can draft it in one if it knows what you did, and most of what you did happened in a PR review, a Slack thread, and a standup the model never saw. Why does a five-line update take 40 minutes?

It's Friday at 4:45. The update is due at 5:00. You open Slack, scroll to Monday, and try to remember what the fire on Tuesday was. You open the PR list, the ticket board, your calendar. The week was real and full, and reconstructing it is the entire job, because the writing takes four minutes once you know what to say. Nobody was keeping the record while you were doing the work.

What makes a status update worth reading?

Managers read dozens a week. The ones that get read share a shape, and it's short.

  • Done. Three to five things that shipped or closed. Link them.
  • Next. What you're doing next week, in priority order.
  • Blocked. What you need from someone else, with the name.
  • Decisions. Anything decided this week that other people should know.
  • Risks. What might slip, said early.

How do you write it with ChatGPT or Claude?

Paste the week. Copy your merged PRs, the tickets you moved, your standup notes, and last week's update as a style sample, then ask for the five sections. The synthesis is good. The collecting is the same 40 minutes you were trying to save, and pasting internal threads into a general assistant is a question your security team may have views on. For an occasional big update it's fine. As a weekly habit it doesn't hold.
