1. Littlebird: memory of your work, not your chats

Littlebird is a personal AI assistant that already knows your work. The tradeoff is the storage model. The app runs on your computer, and the memory it builds is encrypted and stored in the AWS cloud. 2. ChatGPT: the memory of what you told it

ChatGPT is a powerful general assistant, and its memory got materially better this year. On June 4, 2026, OpenAI began rolling out a memory upgrade it calls Dreaming: instead of waiting for you to save memories by hand, a background process reads across your past conversations, builds a picture of you, and revises it as time passes. You can review the summary, correct it, and tell it what to bring up. It began with Plus and Pro users in the US (OpenAI, June 2026).

The limit is the source. ChatGPT remembers what happened inside ChatGPT. Your Tuesday meeting, the client email, the spec you edited in another window, none of that reaches it unless you paste it in. It's a great memory of your chats.

Choose ChatGPT when you want a capable general assistant that gets more personal over time, and you're happy to supply work context yourself.

3. Claude: memory you can read line by line

Claude is powerful when you give it the right context, and Anthropic rolled persistent memory out to all Claude users, free and paid, in March 2026. In July it rebuilt the system around individual, categorized memory entries that Claude reads and updates as you talk, and on August 25, 2026, it unified that memory across Claude chat and Claude Cowork, so what it learns in one place carries to the other (TechCrunch, Engadget, August 2026). You can read, edit, or delete any entry, and turn the feature off.

Same limit as ChatGPT: the memory is fed by conversations with Claude and the files you bring it. It doesn't retroactively add past conversations, and it doesn't see the work you do elsewhere.

Choose Claude for research, writing, complex reasoning, deep document analysis, and coding, especially if you want the most transparent memory controls of the general assistants.

4. Gemini: memory that's on by default

Gemini's memory lives under Personal context in settings and lets it learn from your past chats to personalize answers. Google rolled the past-chats feature out to free users in March 2026, having previously reserved it for AI subscribers. It's on by default for personal accounts, you can opt out, and it isn't available in the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland (Google support, verified September 2026).

It's the same category of memory as ChatGPT and Claude: what you said to Gemini. If you live in Google Workspace, its reach into Gmail and Calendar is a real advantage, but it still doesn't know what happened in your other apps or on your calls.

Choose Gemini if your work already lives in Google's apps and you want an assistant that reads across them.

5. Notion AI: memory as pages

Notion AI's memory is Notion itself. Its agent stores what it learns as Notion pages and databases, and standing instructions persist across sessions. Notion also ships native AI Meeting Notes, publicly available since May 2025, which capture your device's audio without a bot, transcribe, and summarize into a Notion page (Notion help center, verified September 2026).

The boundary is the workspace. Notion AI knows what's in Notion. Work that happens in your browser, your terminal, your inbox, or a meeting you didn't record stays outside it.

Choose Notion AI when your team's documents and projects already live in Notion and you want the assistant inside that workspace.

6. Mem: memory of the notes you write

Mem relaunched as Mem 2.0 in early 2026, positioning itself as an AI thought partner: a notes app that feels like a plain notes app, with an AI that organizes and retrieves what you put in (Mem, verified September 2026). It's a good answer to the question "where do my notes go" and a good chat partner over them.

It remembers what you type into it. The capture is still yours to do.

7. Screenpipe: local memory you run yourself

Screenpipe is an open-source screen and audio recorder from a Y Combinator S26 company. It continuously captures screenshots, accessibility trees, and audio transcripts, and indexes everything into a local SQLite database on macOS and Windows, with Linux experimental. There's a free tier and paid plans, and you can point ChatGPT, Claude, or a local model at the data (Screenpipe on GitHub, verified September 2026).

It's the closest thing on this list to Littlebird's idea of memory, built the other way round: everything stays on your machine, and you assemble the assistant on top. That's a real strength if you want it, and a real project if you don't.

Which kind of memory is actually useful?
